WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) means a wireless local network. The abbreviation Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) is often mixed-up with WLAN. Wi-Fi is an association which is certifying WLAN products.
WLAN´ were used in two different ways:
In the infrastructure mode a special base station will be determined, as a rule an access point (AP). This AP coordinates the single network nodes. Most of the connection to other networks is made by this AP.
No special base station (AP) will be determined in the ad-hoc mode because all of them are equal. In networks like this an exchanging of datas is easily possible but no specific routing to extern networks. For that the ad-hoc networks can be installed quickly and without a great effort.
The advantages of WLAN are mentioned-below:
- buildings which are protected as a historical monument
- conference rooms which are individually used
- subsequent implementing of new offices
- network access on the whole area of the company
- easy connection for field represantatives
